Tickers in CompuStat

A student recently came to the appointment with a list of tickers, but a number of them weren’t recognized by CompuStat North America, like for example Merril Lynch. Searching for the correct code manually, with company lookup, gave strange results.

According to the WRDS helpdesk, that’s because CompuStat after a merger reassignes the name/ticker/cusip of the company to match the new company.

The solution is the use the GVKey (but you can’t find that identifier from Thomson) or use CCM, because CRSP maintains all historical company names, cusip and tickers, for all companies as they look like before mergers/bankruptcies/corporate restructuring events.
