Using Excel files from WRDS in Google Docs

We’ve recieved several ‘complaints’ about the combination of Excel-files downloaded from WRDS and Google Docs/Google Drive: when you want to open a file within Google Drive, downloaded from WRDS you get an error-message:

This is probably caused by the Excel-version of the document WRDS sends to you. Our advise: download the file from WRDS, open it in Excel, save it as .xls or xlsx, then upload it to Google Drive.

When you choose Save as in Excel, you’ll see that the original file from WRDS is a .xml-file instead of a .xls-file. .xml-files are not supported by Google Drive.
