The data you download from for example WRDS or other data sources may not be directly useful: all data ends up in the first column of your Excel sheet. In that case, you might have downloaded a csv-file (comma seperated values). It depends on the Region and Language settings of your computer how a csv-file is opened.
To get your data in columns, you can do the following:
- Open the file
- Select the column with the data
- Open the tab Data in Excel
- Click the button Text to Columns
- Mark Delimited
- Click the button Next
- Mark Comma
- Click Finish
Ps. If you change the Region and Language settings on the Control Panel to English (United States) the files might open correctly.
