FAQ: All data in 1 column in Excel

The data you download from for example WRDS or other data sources, can look strange: all data is put in the first column of your Excel sheet. In that case, you might have downloaded a csv-file (comma seperated values). It depends on the Region and Language settings of your computer how a csv-file is opened.

1 column

To get your data in columns, you can do the following:

  • Open the file
  • Select the column with the data
  • Open the tab Data in Excel
  • Click the button Text to Columns
  • Mark Delimited
  • Click the button Next
  • Mark Comma
  • Click Finish

Ps. If you change the Region and Language settings on the Control Panel to English (United States) the files might open correctly.
