Tip: Variable search in WRDS

Within Wharton Research Data Service (WRDS), a lot of datatypes are available: stock prices (CRSP), annual or quarterly report data (CompuStat), compensation data (ExecuComp), forecasts (I/B/E/S), governance data (RiskMetrics) and more. The “Help my find my data” option, in the left upper corner of WRDS can be helpful. This is a dataset list by concept.

Another useful option is the Variable search. You can find it under the tab Research, and then in the menu at the left side of the page onder WRDS Tools.

At step 1 you have to (un)mark the datasets you want to use. Be aware that in this list all datasets are available, not just the ones you have access to.

You can enter the variable you’re looking for in the box at the bottom of the page.

WRDS will return a list of Library & file names, variable names and descriptions:

variable search wrds

This will help you select a database within WRDS.
